Bladex promotes the Marea Verde Seven Basins Project
Bladex, along with other leading companies, has supported the Seven Basins Project since its inception, a multi-sector initiative led by the Marea Verde Foundation in partnership with the prestigious international organization The Ocean Cleanup.
This project will allow the expansion of efforts to reduce plastic pollution in the rivers that flow into the Bay of Panama.
The Bay of Panama is recognized as a Ramsar site and Protected Area, with an ecosystem of great ecological value.
The Seven Basins Project is a response to the growing threat of plastic waste in marine ecosystems.
By installing collection systems in strategic rivers, the initiative aims to intercept waste before it reaches the ocean, preserving biodiversity and promoting sustainable waste management.
The Seven Basins Project is based on the successful experience of Marea Verde in the Juan Díaz River in Panama City, where since September 2022, more than 290,000 kilos of waste have been prevented from reaching the ocean through the use of floating barriers and collection systems.
Worldwide, The Ocean Cleanup has removed more than 20 million kilos of waste through its actions in rivers and oceans.
With this collaboration, the combination of local knowledge and advanced technology will allow the expansion of the cleanup efforts in the Bay of Panama.
As part of this emblematic project, Bladex reaffirms its role as an agent of change in environmental protection.
With its financial and strategic support, the Bank is contributing to the installation of innovative waste collection technologies, as well as the development of environmental education programs to raise awareness about responsible waste management.
In addition to supporting the project's infrastructure, Bladex also promotes the educational and environmental awareness component through Casa de Wanda, another Marea Verde Project that is a fundamental pillar for sustainable change in waste management.
“Bladex's commitment to sustainability transcends our operations. We believe in the power of partnerships to make a positive and lasting impact on our environment. Being part of the Seven Basins Project as a founding donor, together with renowned companies such as Procter & Gamble, Banco General, Morgan & Morgan and Grupo Rey, allows us to support concrete solutions to reduce plastic pollution in the Bay of Panama and strengthen environmental awareness in the region,” said Jorge Salas, CEO of Bladex.
In this way, we continue to support initiatives that promote sustainability and responsible development in the region, reaffirming our role as a financial institution committed to the protection of the environment and the well-being of future generations.
